How to choose the right size of tights

Finding the perfect pair of tights can be tricky, especially when it comes to getting the size right. Ill-fitting tights can sag, roll down, or even tear prematurely. On the other hand, the right size will not only feel comfortable but will also enhance your outfit by giving you a smooth, polished finish. To make the process simple, let’s break down how to use the sizing chart above to select the perfect fit.

Step 1: Measure Your Height and Hips

The two key measurements for choosing tights are height and hip circumference.

  • Height: Stand straight and measure from the top of your head to your feet without shoes.

  • Hips: Measure around the fullest part of your hips, ensuring the tape measure stays level all the way around.

Once you have your height (in centimetres or feet and inches) and hip measurement (in centimetres or inches), you can easily find your recommended size using the chart.

Step 2: Locate Your Range on the Chart

The sizing table divides measurements into four hip categories:

  • 86–96 cm (34–38”)

  • 96–107 cm (38–42”)

  • 107–122 cm (42–48”)

  • 122–137 cm (48–54”)

It also groups height into five ranges, from 152–158 cm (5’0”–5’2”) up to 175–178 cm (5’9”–5’10”).
Once you find your measurements in both columns, trace across and down to find where they intersect — that’s your size.

For example:

  • If you are 161 cm tall and have 100 cm hips, your recommended size would be Medium.

  • If you are 172 cm with 115 cm hips, you’d likely need a Large.

  • Someone who is 161 cm and has 124 cm hips would fit best in X-Large.

Step 3: Consider Fit Preferences

While the chart gives a reliable guide, some personal preferences also play a role. If you prefer a firmer, more supportive feel, you can opt for the smaller size within your range. For extra comfort or if you’re between sizes, it’s usually best to go one size up. This helps prevent overstretching, which can make tights more prone to runs and tears.

Step 4: Try and Adjust

Different brands can vary slightly in their sizing, even if they use the same measurements. If you find that your usual size feels too snug or loose, adjust accordingly the next time you buy. Over time, you’ll get a sense of the fit that feels best for your body shape and preference.

Step 5: Care for Your Tights

To maintain the perfect fit, always handwash your tights in cool water and dry them separately. Heat can damage the delicate fibres, causing them to lose elasticity and fit less comfortably.
